A picture book entitled Sessa Bokugi (i.e., Polished Ink Play) was published in 1881. The name of its editor was given (i.e., Shinroku Yano) but not the name of the artist who drew the pictures. The book’s ten pictures of flowers and (or) birds are shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. The artist used a Chinese style of drawing which aimed to capture the spirit of the objects’ depicted rather than their true shapes and colors.
